Several R&D institutions from different European countries (France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Moldova and Republic of Belarus) are working together in a project with the aim of understanding (1) when and how young people become aware of their European identity; (2) how European consciousness his emerging among young people from different countries, regions and languages and (3) understanding the role of media and cultural assets in the European awareness among young people.

In Portugal, under the degree in New Communication Technologies of the University of Aveiro, a research team is dealing with a particular topic of this project: “The Media and Culture influence in the European Conscience of the Portuguese Youth”. This sub-project aims to understand how the media and cultural goods consumption, along with other social and technological factors, influence the perception of the Europe citizenship among the Portuguese youth.

An empirical study based on several focus groups (with not only Portuguese participants, but also Erasmus students from other European countries) is the basis for the outcome of the project: a video documentary reflecting the main conclusions on this theme incorporating some advanced features like on-line automatic translation and motion graphics with statistics data. The documentary also includes video extracts of the focus group sessions stressing out some its dynamics and illustrating how the young Portuguese percept the media consummation habits and cultural goods. In this context it is possible to understand the reality of communication of European themes in a national context, namely tanking in consideration:

- The mergence of and the discourse about new mass media (popular press, film, radio and TV broadcasting, the internet);

- Media Change in specific European ‘regions’ or geo-political formations;

- The EU project and the European Public.

Young people today are immersed in the dynamics of media consumption that puts them in a privileged situation of cross-border relationships. The experience in this context should increase awareness and curiosity among young Europeans and create opportunities for the formation of a plural identity, despite the socio-cultural specificity of each country.
